My students go to an inner city school in Illinois, which has been struggling for years with academics. I have a small group of students in a self contained special ed class for emotional/behavior disabilities. Most do not have home support to help them with their academics so I have to do what I can with them in the short amount of time I have them each day. Also many of them do not come prepared with what they need each day to be successful (school supplies, uniform, food, enough sleep, etc.) Even though they come in with a lot of "baggage" I still hold them to high expectations. They need to be prepared to take care of themselves in just a few years and I try to give them those tools each day I am with them.
