The large majority of students that attend my school are from a low socioeconomic families. Although these families have instilled in their children a love and importance for learning, many of them lack the resources to provide reading material in the home. Most of these children have had very few experiences outside of the city or neighborhood in which they live. Therefore much of what they are exposed to in the science and social studies curriculum in school is completely foreign to them. They lack the much needed background knowledge that allows them to grasp these very abstract ideas and historical events taught.
