This iPad will help my students in a variety of ways. First, it will allow us to wirelessly project student work from anywhere in the room or hallways. As young adults, my students fill up our space easily. We move around constantly and work with materials from cars, ramps and pendulums to bunsen burners and chemical substances. In previous years, chords have been a safety concern and constantly untangling them has taken time away from learning. This IPad will serve as a mobile document camera and, together with an Apple TV I secured funding for, will project demonstrations, models, observations and data wirelessly.
Additionally, this iPad will help students bridge what Jorge Cham coined "The Science Gap." One of the gaps in science that Gorge refers to is the gap between scientific research and the public. Most people are unaware of scientific findings because the research is not communicated effectively. With this IPad, my students will have the opportunity to explore a variety of ways in which to share their own scientific findings. From animation to comics to videos, students will work to find ways to engage their peers, parents and the public.
