I teach visual arts to grades 3 through 5 in a specialized school, where all of my students have special needs, and have a wide range of abilities and challenges. The majority of my students are also from high poverty areas and have little to no exposure to the arts outside of my classroom. Because every child learns differently, and because the arts are a proven vehicle for learning and processing, my class serves an important purpose, beyond the creation of art for art's sake. My students learn concepts that carry over into ever other facet of the curriculum, from science and mathematical concepts to ELA and social studies.
