Last year, my students gobbled up the books I made available in my classroom library. They were excited when they saw me in the hallway building the shelves during my conference period. When I would introduce a new title and tell them I bought this with 鈥渟o-and-so鈥 in mind, they would jump out of their seats and race to get the book first. They had time in class to read and discuss their books, which they loved doing. They loved sharing and recommending books to each other and asking each other what part of the book they were on and remembering what they thought or felt about that part.
And they always asked for more books.
I could not keep up with purchasing enough copies of the books they enjoyed, especially when they wanted the sequel or another book from the same author. This project will help make engaging, culturally relevant books accessible to my students who, otherwise, would rarely even be exposed to these titles, titles which speak so well toward their own experiences.
