I have a wonderful group of 19 first graders who love to read. Our classroom uses Daily 5 as our framework for literacy instruction. Each day, the students choose authentic literacy activities that help them become better readers and writers. While my students are actively involved in their choice activities, I pull small groups of students for a book club, using multiple copies of the same book. My students have worked hard to gain confidence and stamina in reading. They have learned how to pick books at their "good-fit" level, which is a level where the student can be successful and enjoy the reading experience. The challenge is to have enough books to motivate and inspire my beginning readers and to read with my book clubs.
