Imagine a five-year old accidentally pushing one table closer to another because they are trying to write on a low table while standing up. The other kindergarteners at the table get distracted from the table moving because their pencil is consequently dragged across the page. At another table a student yells "ouch!" after a peer accidentally kicks him under a table. The kindergartener looks embarrassed and says, "Sorry." She was so focused on her work she did not even realize she was kicking her legs under the table the whole time. Such moments have inspired me to create our kindergarten "focus spots." This classroom management idea is now commonly referred to as flexible seating. My students can work anywhere in the room as long as they are safe and staying focused.
By donating to this project, you will provide students with a "focus spot" which increases student engagement and stamina thereby improving their overall academic growth. Wobble chairs and seats allow students to move while working. New tables will allow students to work comfortably on all sides of the tables without accidentally hurting their legs on horizontal poles under our current tables. The new tables will also allow children to sit on all sides of the table maximizing our learning space. Student desks will be raised to a height appropriate to allow our kindergarteners the option of standing and using the kick-fidget bands while working. Your donation will provide students with opportunities to discover how much fun it can be to learn and share space together peacefully.
