For a diverse classroom with multiple home languages, pretend play is the most effective way to incorporate language development, social skills, and academic skills. Children learn best through play. Research supports this. It allows students to apply everything they know, and encourages them to ask questions and seek out new information. Play is crucial to healthy development.
With these costumes and props, students will actively engage in their learning, as we rotate through the themes throughout the school year. They will take on roles as astronauts, doctors, patients, chefs, bakers, customers, mail carriers, and firefighters. They will be reading, writing, adding, subtracting, negotiating, all while practicing social skills and oral language.
