Mental health is more important than ever after the last year and a half of struggles and changes due to Covid.
Thankfully children in general are resilient and flexible but this does not mean that their mental health should take a backseat to their education. I believe that mental health is just as important and counselors and teachers need to work hand in hand to support the whole student. A student with strong coping skills and a growth mindset will have the best chances to become a successful learner.
With that in mind, I am asking for hands on materials and workbooks that promote mindfulness and social emotional learning. As a brand new school counselor, I am starting out with very few resources and materials, other than my physical self, to offer my students in their time of need. I am looking for games, thought provoking cards, fidget toys, art supplies puzzles, conversation cubes and books that support the whole student. I am also seeking a cart to hold and organize it all. To have these materials available to my students will create a comfortable calm environment where they can feel safe to open up and take advantage of the SEL lessons that I can offer.
While not as glamorous or urgent, my counseling room could also benefit from snacks for many of my students who may not have enough to eat home and sanitation materials such as hand sanitizer, tissues and sanitizing wipes.
