I teach 4th Grade in a large, rural school in NC. They are made of an ethnically diverse population; yet, have not had any experience learning about or discussing deep and complex literary characters, such as India Opal in this novel. Our school is made of approximately 76% free/reduced price lunch and many economically disadvantaged students. Even with their challenging situations, they love learning and come to school with positive attitudes! I feel they will benefit immensely as learners from vicariously experiencing struggles with friendship, parents leaving, and being the "new" kid in school, especially through identifying with realistic characters.
