Bringing books into our classroom is one of the most joyful events you could experience. My students spend the class period trying, and failing, to "sneak" peaks into the book boxes. I theatrically pull each book out of the box and give them a teaser by reading a few pages or the blurb on the back until they are so excited they must have the books in their hands.
I chose each of these titles with specific students in mind, these are novels I know they will love. Kwame Alexander has inspired some of my struggling readers to pick up a book of poetry for the first time, and have to hide it under their desks in other classes so that they can finish the last few pages. My students cheer when they hear the names of Latinx, and African American authors who write stories they can find themselves in like "Brown Girl Dreaming," "Love, Sugar, Magic," "American Street," and "Call Me by my Name." My beginning readers who are just starting to feel the love of reading enjoy hi-lo chapter books that respect their maturity such as, "Body Switch," The Code," and "Lost Treasure."
These books were picked with brilliant, beautiful children in mind who have every intention of changing our world for the better. Please help to inspire them.
