My first graders love to learn by doing. Using manipulatives such as counters, dice and base ten blocks help them understand key math concepts and provide them with hands-on learning experiences. The finger flashlights complement our reading curriculum and add a new twist to learning. Students love to use the flashlights to highlight new words as they learn new reading strategies. The excitement as the students use these tools as they practice reading skills is contagious! The document camera will help project books and other materials so that students can view materials whether in class or at home. The dice, base ten blocks and counters will give students valuable experiences in learning number sense, addition, subtraction and place value. I love seeing my students smile as they gain understanding by using manipulatives! All materials will be given to students for their use, whether they are in blended or remote learning.
Due to COVID-19, many of my students are in blended or remote learning and don't have access to the individual sets of manipulatives needed to help them understand and internalize first grade concepts. Donors Choose will enable me to provide all of my students with access to the materials they need in order to succeed in their studies, whether they are learning in school or at home. By donating to this project, you give my students the chance to reach their learning potential. The smiles on their faces as they use these tools to improve their skills will warm my heart and the hearts of their parents who are struggling economically and cannot afford to purchase these materials.
