I would like for my students to have alternative seating options while working on their center work or collaborating with each other. Having these choices will allow students the ownership over their learning and behavior as well as working with their peers.
The collaboration that goes on during our center time and group work time is very valuable in learning the skills to communicate, work with others, and making decisions. My students need to be able to move about and sit in other areas of our classroom as well as be comfortable and still engaged in their learning.
I plan to purchase several types of alternative seating, such as wobble cushions, wobble chairs, floor rocker chairs, inflatable seats, lap desks, etc. so that my students have the ability to sit where they choose but are still able to focus and work. Having a choice helps with ownership and allows the students to feel empowered to make their own decisions about seating.
