After years of teaching we have noticed that students can learn the steps to solve math problems but what they struggle with is the motivation to try, fail and then try again. We are hoping to encourage productive struggle and problem solving skills by playing board games and teaching strategic thinking. These board games will be used in intervention and enrichment activities to revisit math concepts in new and engaging ways.
What better way to learn about failure and mistakes than playing a low stakes board game? For example, we used a deck of cards to turn a game of war into a fun way to talk about positive(black) and negative(red) numbers. Even in this simple game we saw how challenging losing was for our students to bounce back from. In our classrooms we want to make failure a part of the process because mistakes are where the learning happens.
