Having a listening center in my classroom allows my students to listen to a story while following along with the book. They are able to hear fluency, tone, and voice in the reader. This is great for reluctant readers, because it helps to have that voice reading along with them while they practice reading a story. It is also a great tool for more advanced readers, because it can be used to expose them to more challenging text. Having headphones is crucial in a listening center because it allows all students in that center to hear the story, but the rest of the students in the classroom are still able to work and focus on their own tasks.
