One area my students struggle with is having access to quality reading material that is relatable, challenging and grade level appropriate. Scholastic News will help cement in my students an appetite for reading as well as address issues in the classroom which are relevant to my students' academic and personal lives. Science Spin will help me supplement the science curriculum because it provides a rich informational reading experience on real-world science topics and the latest scientific advancements.
Students will be using Scholastic News and Science Spin during our Literacy Center time in order to practice close reading strategies, learn about the world around them and to develop their critical thinking and communication skills. This is critical because Literacy Center time is when I work with small groups while the other students are working collaboratively to meet literacy goals.
