My students are incredible. Each and every one of them comes to school each and every day and you know that they are giving everything they have for that day. My school features optional single gender classrooms and my class is an all-boys fourth-grade class. As a former library media specialist, I love to read, and I've been very fortunate to instill or continue that love of reading for each of the students in this classroom.
Our school brought in a reading program five years ago while I was in the library and with it came a feature that counts words in the books that students read and pass. It didn't take long before one student went on an all out reading blitz to finish that year and ended with a million words read. Since that day, each year, I have been promoting students reach for loftier goals in reading including one million or more words in a school year. My students are hungry for reading materials of all sizes and deeply enjoy when they see their reading levels grow.
