I believe math can make sense. Math is hard, but most worthwhile things are. I want our classroom to be a place students can face the challenges math presents and persevere in solving them. It should be a safe space where all students feel supported in taking risks so they can grow, a place of reflection and action; and most of all, it should be a place students want to be.
My motto is: Do math every day! Class should be an engaging, active time during which we are all doing math. Doing math looks like reading and writing on handouts and posters and whiteboards; it involves calculating, cutting, pasting, measuring, sketching, building computer models, and much more. It sounds like "How did you get this result?" Or "I did this part differently. Can you explain your way?" And it feels...EMPOWERING and FUN!
