My K-3 class consists of eleven students with autism. Autism is their primary disability and some of them have speech and language impairment and intellectual disability as secondary disability. Despite these challenges, they are able to learn using manipulative materials that are engaging to them. They learn counting and other numeracy skills through manipulatives. They are learning how to communicate using Picture Exchange Communication System and through the use of Speech Generating Devices.
My students are in a self-contained classroom but some of them are mainstreamed in the general education classroom. They are very successful in following a visual schedule that guides their activities throughout the day.
