My students are typical middle school children just trying to fit in. However, they have some obstacles that include poverty and english is a second language for over 80% of the students. The students attend an urban city public school. When money is tight the first place the city cuts money is from extra curricular activities. With parents having to work nights, weekends and two jobs just to pay the bills the computer and TV become a focus in the students day and the typical middle school student eats while watching TV.
