These students have worked incredibly hard to learn to read notes on the staff, and now I'd like to give them the opportunity to explore a lightweight and very user-friendly folk instrument: the ukulele! We will work our way through some classic Hawaiian literature and make our way to the 12-bar blues.
Through learning a fretted instrument, these students will understand chord structure, how to read a lead sheet and chord charts, and be introduced to the history of folk music.
Ukuleles are the perfect instrument for 5th and 6th graders. It will encourage them to sing, create and perform!
