My students are enthusiastic, energetic and excited about school each and every day. They love learning new things about the world around them, but sometimes struggle with expressing their thoughts and ideas. Why is this? My students are profoundly deaf and use technology (cochlear implants or hearing aids) to hear and speak in a fast pace world. I focus on literacy instruction for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing program at a middle school-so students in sixth, seventh and eighth grade, but also support them in the general education math classes. Deafness does not know economic class, ethnicity or citizenship. My students understand that they are going through a struggle most people do not have to do, but their belief in themselves shines through their struggle everyday. We start and end each day cheering, in true sports fashion, that "WE BELIEVE WE WILL LEARN!".
