My students come from an urban population, in Southeast Virginia. Many of them are from households with financial difficulties. While some of my students have access to great cultural opportunities like ballet and symphony performances, most of them do not. I struggle to even the playing field. I believe students who have had repeated, consistent exposure to great musical works, and who discuss not only the technical aspects, but also the emotional impact, have an advantage in school and life.
