I teach at a Title I school with 94% of students on free or reduced lunch. Most of our families have very little, but our trying to build a better future for their kids. Our school is very diverse, which makes it both wonderful and challenging. We have large populations of Polynesians, Latinos, and Africans as well as students from many other parts of the world. A significant portion of our students are refugees or immigrants.
Most of the students are hard working and strive to do their best despite language and cultural barriers. The kids in my class specifically work hard to do their best everyday. They love to read, write, sing, and do art. This year we have been integrating more of the arts into the curriculum, including art, dance, and musics in order to build visual literacy, observation skills, and interest.
The school is the center of the community and helps families access what they need, so they can be successful. It provides many programs for students and families
