My students learn in two languages, reading and writing in both English and Spanish. That means twice as much essay writing, twice as much research, and it means we need Internet resources often when the Spanish-language book is not available or is too expensive.
Luckily, my students LOVE technology. They earn the chance to play on freerice.com after finishing their work. When it's time to research about immigration laws, or the use of drones in Afghanistan, they evaluate the credibility and potential bias of the source. Then they devour the information, often calling each other over -- "You've got to read this!"
These middle schoolers are curious, hilarious, and irrepressible. They want to know everything, and they imagine themselves as leaders. I want to do anything I can to encourage these qualities and play to their strengths, even as I try to help them improve their reading and writing skills.
