These carefully selected items will help transform my hurricane-damaged classroom into an inviting, sensory-rich environment where my kiddos can experience the joy in learning and the importance of communication. Each item will directly impact every student that walks into my classroom and even walks past my door. These items will also help others that are newly identified and future students, as the items will continue to be available and used in years to come.
My students will have the option to select sensory enhancing fidgets to keep their hands busy and their minds open. They will have alternative/flexible seating options as they select which seat best meets their needs as we sit together in a communication circle working towards achieving their unique, individualized goals. My students will use the games to practice their social skills all the while learning about places, people, and animals living in our world. Their articulation and fluency skills will be addressed by reading the story cards all while playing. The bookcases will provide a space of organization for my student' materials so that the kiddos are able to access them independently...and the desk; it will provide a space for me to write the many evaluations, IEPs, and service log notes. It will give me space to use the laminator to create individualized picture icons and visuals my students require to assist them in communicating daily their basic wants, needs, likes, and dislikes.
Overall, my hope is that you will allow me to create a space for my children that promotes giving the gift of communication, which is at the core of our existence.
