Many of my students face daily struggles in their home life, from living with their entire family in one room to not having dinner and having to survive on the free lunch provided at school. The neighborhood is dominated by gangs and drugs; the students feel safer at school than they do at home. Despite their circumstances, they show up every day with a smile on their faces, ready to learn. They have an undeniable enthusiasm for learning. Unlike many, I wake up in the morning looking forward to going to work, excited to fill their brains with knowledge. I am fortunate to have my 6th graders the entire day and teach them all subjects, including Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Physical Education. They are engaged in each and every lesson, having academic class discussions and collaborative conversations with their classmates. Over the course of the year, I see the growth they make. It is so rewarding to make a difference in their lives and inspire them to dream big.
