This year, our school's focus is on kindness, and each and every one of us- students, teachers, and staff- has taken a pledge to be kind to each other. I can think of no other book that better exemplifies the importance of being kind than the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio. With the books and materials from this project, we will be able to do a school-wide book study of Wonder.
K-3rd grade teachers will read We Are All Wonders to their in-person and online classes, and 4-5 grade teachers will read Wonder to theirs. Once the classes have finished reading the books, each grade level will create Wonder agamograph collaboration posters, and 4th and 5th grade students will create precept posters that explain what their chosen precept means to them. These will be hung around the collaboration posters and will help to spread the message of kindness.
Reading a common book together will have the added benefit of building and expanding a sense of community among students, teachers, staff, and parents.
