I teach at a turnover school in a low income area in Michigan. Two years ago, it was one of the lowest performing elementary schools in the state, and we are now rapidly climbing up. The school is in a high-poverty area and many of our students see school as an escape. Our students view school as a fun, safe place where their creativity and achievement is encouraged on a daily basis. They have an inspiring yearning to learn and are taught to be self-motivated and take ownership over their school and education. Because we have extended school days and an 11-month school year, our students spend a great deal of time at school and think of it as a home away from home.
