My students are wonderful 3rd graders, a bunch of very excited 8-9 year olds. They sure keep me on my toes. All of my lovelies live in Hartford, Connecticut and come to see me at their neighborhood school every day. This community is generally low income and fairly culturally diverse. We are constantly striving to meet our "Compass for Learners" here, which includes four points: courtesy, craftsmanship, resilience, and responsibility. Every student in this school, from pre-k to 5th grade, knows, understands, and can give examples of what those points mean to them.
In 3rd grade, these compass points become more important than ever before. This is the point in school where students are expected to read to learn, instead of learn to read. The expectations are high and can be daunting to many students. They learn to be supportive of each other and of themselves.
