My goal is to create a nurturing environment that represents and empowers my students. I want to help them realize their greatness and give them the resources to explore the world they live in.
I included texts by renowned African-American authors, like Toni Morrison and Jacqueline Woodson, because representation is crucial.
Flexible seating, like beanbag chairs and stools, is important, because some students are hyperactive and sitting in a four-legged chair just doesn't work for them. I want my students to be comfortably engaged, not "seated and compliant." I will have these flexible seating options in the classroom library so that reading is more enjoyable for my students.
A composition notebook, post-it notes, and a pencil- these supplies are essential to me. Students will use these supplies to record anything they're thinking or feeling as they read. Students will be more inclined to interact and engage with the text.
