Every day, I hear small stories of heroism in my classroom. Many of my middle school students have faced obstacles that demand such strength, flexibility and courage that I often wonder how they continue to show up to school each day, with bright, smiling faces and minds eager to read and pencils ready to write. I teach Language Arts and Social Studies in a large, diverse suburban middle school in Oregon. Our school is rich with economic and cultural diversity. We have over 40 languages represented, 55% of students are people of color, and over 65% receive free or reduced lunch.
