My students are an active group ranging from the ages of 6 to 11 years old and sitting still for 8 hours a day is an unrealistic expectation.
Students are engaged and active learners when they're sitting comfortably and have various options.
Flexible seating has been proven to raise student engagement and lower student behavior issues and allowing students movement has proven to help with focus on tasks. In a therapeutic classroom setting, students have trouble regulating their emotions and do best when they are given choices.
We are extremely excited to provide our students with the ideal setting for their needs. The items I have placed in my cart are to assist my students in their learning environment. The ball chairs will be used for students while working at the small group table. The balls allow for small controlled bounces along with wobble chairs using the core to balance and movement they need without being disruptive. The Big Joe chairs will be set on a carpet to give the at home comfortable space. The students can choose a clip board or lap desk to work. The high table for students who prefer to stand and work. Swivel stools are for those students in need movement and flexibility too. Our students group meetings we will have the scoop chairs that rock, soft ottoman, and cushion pads will be ideal for non disruptive choices for whole group on our carpet. We will also have a therapeutic corner for our classroom clinician to provide one on one time with the students set up with a bean bag chair for comfort to relax or de-escalate. Lastly, we will have fidgets through out the room to regulate impulsivity. Starting out the year with flexible seating will make it the best year yet!!!
