These novels will be used in Problem Based Learning lessons (PBL). The key to engaging students in PBL is choice, and the novels I have requested give students additional choices (currently they only have two). The novels will be used to encourage students to focus on social injustices, problem solving, collaboration, writing and presentation skills.
The novels will be integral to the entire year, as all of the units will focus on social injustice with the choice novel as the thread that ties it all together. These novels will engage my students through content that is relatable to their real world experiences. These books will be used in combination with informational texts and research skills to create, argumentative writing pieces, PSA's, spoken word poetry or any number of other project ideas that convey the lessons learned from their novel choice. My students will be able to use the novels as a jumping off point for addressing social injustices in the real world through a number of avenues. I believe these novels will spark the creativity and love of learning within my students.
