Problem solving means engaging in a task for which the solution is not known in advance. Good problem solvers have a "mathematical disposition"--they analyze situations carefully in mathematical terms and naturally come to pose problems based on situations they see. I want to provide our third graders with the manipulatives and activities needed to succeed in problem solving, but we do not have the extra money needed to provide these wonderful supplies. We are a Title One school, which means that most of our students receive free lunch, and I cannot ask parents for the extra money.
