I teach students with autism and other disabilities including ADHD. My classroom has students ranging in age from 5-8 years old. Currently my classroom consists of all boys. They are active learners who enjoy and benefit from hands on materials. Novel items are motivating and result in increased learning.
My students attend a school of approximately 300 students and are included to the greatest extent possible with their same age peers. Over the summer, they will be attending another elementary school in town due to construction at our elementary school.
All of my students need instruction in social skills and help managing their behavior. Utilizing the camping theme I can make learning social skills engaging and fun. Students will learn how to interact with others, cooperate towards a common goal, and participate in academic lessons in an engaging and motivating environment. When students are engaged and motivated they are less likely to engage in negative behaviors.
