My students are a fantastic bunch of 8 and 9 year olds! However, most of them receive free or reduced priced meals. Many live in broken and unstable homes. For most, school is the most stable and consistent part of their lives. They have a strong desire to learn and achieve success; even when at times it seems that the odds are stacked against them. Sadly however, a majority of my students don't have access to books at home and they often don't have a role model at home stressing the importance of an education.
