Teaching a variety of secondary mathematics courses ranging from Geometry to Applied Mathematics to Financial Literacy, many of my classroom materials are in need of updating and/ or need to be replaced as they are either severely worn or simply outdated. Basic items that will be beneficial to all courses include scientific calculators, organizers, manipulatives and art/ craft supplies. Financial Literacy would greatly benefit from an updated curriculum as we are currently using a 2007 curriculum that was teacher purchased.
Since the pandemic, students struggle with staying focused, self esteem and seeing the benefit and use of learning Geometry, Applied Math and/ or Financial Literacy. Hands-on manipulatives and project based learning opportunities help deviate from the standard teaching practices and allow kinetic learners and those with learning difficulties a different approach to learning material, as well as a mental break from the usual routine.
I want more than anything to build our kids up. Instill values and teach life skills. Help them develop good character, pushing them along the way and encouraging them to do the right thing even if no one is around. Believe in them and cheer them on when the world does otherwise. I know Math isn鈥檛 everyone鈥檚 automatic favorite, nor does it come easy to every student. If I am able to provide learning opportunities to all learners, maybe just maybe Math can be fun and meaningful to all my students.
