I am requesting guided reading level books for my 4th grade English Language Arts students. The majority of my students do not have the financial means nor the transportation to get to the local library to check out literature. Our school strives to have our students "read and graduate" at least once during the school year. This means each student must read a book, take a quiz, and pass the quiz. The average number of books each student needs to read to graduate is over thirty books.
My students face many hardships on a daily basis. Many of their families cannot provide the basic necessities for their children let alone money for reading books. My students also enter 4th grade reading anywhere from 1 to 2 levels below grade level or at grade level. We need books covering all ranges of reading levels.
As my students literacy skills improve it is necessary to have a wide range of reading levels on hand for them to readily access. Have a classroom library and a quiet corner for them to curl up and read a book will give them the advantage they need for academic success in 4th grade and beyond!
