Our high school students have intellectual disabilities, autism, and a few have physical limitations as well. Some will need supervision and care for life while others will be hold down jobs as store clerks, grocery stockers, or furniture assemblers. Many of our students lack confidence, good communication skills and have not had rich experiences in the arts. They would like to sing, paint, and play music, but they haven't had the opportunity. Most come from low income homes, and although a few sing in our school choir, the band program is out of reach for them because of their cognitive disabilities and the difficulty of learning to play a band instrument. One thing they all have in common is an interest in music, and one nonverbal student even hums recognizable tunes such as the Jeopardy theme! Although they are teens my students retain much of the enthusiasm of children. I believe that creating music the classroom will open up a whole new world for many of these young people.
