I am Speech Therapist at a Special-Education Elementary School. I mostly work with students with Autism ranging in age from kindergarten to 6th grade. Each and every one of them has a unique personality, learning style and set of interests and require varying levels of support in/out of the therapy room.
Although my students fill my life with so much love and cheer, many of them come from low-socioeconomic status households, which truly breaks my heart.
My students may learn and interact in ways that are different than how a "typical" child would, but in so many ways they are the same. They love music and dancing, they love laughing and playing games, they need attention and praise just as any other child would. And most importantly, they deserve to be given every opportunity and tool to succeed just as any other child would. If I could only use one word to describe my students, it would definitely be; inspirational.
