After I read Long Way Down for the first time, I knew it was a book I wanted to teach. The broken prose format of the book will make it easy for my kids to dive into and enjoy. The students are currently reading Bronx Masquerade by Nikki Grimes, and many of the students have really enjoyed the poetry of the book. Long way down would be an excellent follow-up book.
These books will give the kids a chance, maybe for the first time in a long time to read a new and current book. It will also provide this class the opportunity to read books that aren't falling apart or taped together. Each student will have the joy of turning the pages for the first time, hearing the pages crinkle as only a new book does.
