Have you ever been driving down the road with your kids in the back seat of the car listening to the radio and your child has asked you..."what does that mean?" or "why did they say that?" or you noticed they started using the new vocabulary they heard from someone else? We call that incidental learning. Something which does not have to be directly taught...they hear it and pick up on it. What happens when the child is Deaf or Hard of Hearing....they miss out on a lot of this incidental learning, then when they go to school they are behind because they don't have the same background knowledge as their peers! I have found a way to even the playing field with the help of modern technology! When a student/educational interpreter has a laptop or iPad to use in the classroom they can quickly visualize the concept, vocabulary or skill to help build that back ground knowledge which allows the student to keep pace with their peers! I am hoping to obtain touch screen laptops for my students in order to enhance their experiences in the general education environment and reduce the time they need to be in a pull out setting with Exceptional Children's teachers who need to front load prior knowledge or teach incidental knowledge that hearing students would have obtained.
