In our classroom children learn self help skills. We teach them to get dressed, feed themselves, and listen to one step directions such as cleaning up. Students work towards doing things independently. During all parts of the day (playtime, meal time, small groups, etc.) children are asked to gather materials, and put things away.
The items I have requested including book bins, cubbies, and storage bins are for designated storage of learning materials. The cubby shelves will be labeled with pictures and easily accessible to students. For example, when it is lunch time, I can tell a student to get a plate, and that student can find what bin is labeled as plates and get it him or herself. Having specific bins to keep materials helps students to know themselves where things are so they can be self sufficient and not rely on teacher direction. Having classroom organization allows children to develop skills efficiently and independently.
Knowing where materials are gives the children in my class independence. Especially for my students who rely on consistency and routine, organization is essential for their success.
