The Legos, BLAGOO building blocks, K'nex, and other hands-on manipulatives are physical objects that I can use as teaching tools to engage students in learning mathematics. They can be used to introduce, practice, or remediate a concept and be used for purposeful learning. The Osmo kit and the iPad would engage and encourage visual thinking, problem solving, and drawing skills. Even the Mr. Potato Head encourages students to be creative and helps build their confidence through social play. Viewmasters are a fun way to explore past and present topics with the vibrate pictures and descriptions.
In kindergarten, hands-on activities using manipulatives are an invaluable way to learn language, reading, math, and science. Providing the opportunity to explore the world around them is so important and many of my students deal with poverty, single parent homes, and drug abuse. Providing opportunities to learn in fun, creative ways will help bridge deficits in learning across the board.
