Statistics have proved that without earning at least four credits during the 9th grade year, a young person is more likely to drop out of high school before reaching the 11th grade year. One reason these young people do not succeed in high school is because of their struggle to read anything placed in front of them.
For the past thirteen years, I have had the opportunity to work with many students who fit this criteria. They read on or below the 6th grade reading level. Many are male. By finding books intriguing to male students, many who would typically drop out of school have found themselves set to graduate on time. They have become more confident in themselves and in their school work.
Unfortunately, students' interests change each year. With our current budget crunches, constant updates to my classroom library isn't possible. I am thankful to all the donors who help these men and women succeed.
