Students need to engage with literature in order to connect with it. Graphic novels with literary merit will allow me to teach my students vital comprehension and analysis skills using real-world, nonfiction graphic stories, while peeking their interest and curiosity! Stories about hope and survival, politics and religion, faith and fear come in many forms. Students don't have to read Victorian or Classical literature alone to learn the skills necessary for post-secondary schooling or for life beyond education. As a high school English teacher, it is my responsibility to create well-rounded readers who become well-rounded citizens. Graphic novels will encourage outside the box thinking for my students.
