My students are currently in a self contained 6:1:1 classroom and are from high poverty areas in Brooklyn. They are all on the Autism Spectrum and are primarily non-verbal. Currently some of the students communicate with picture symbols and some do not have a communication system in place. For this reason, all lessons in the classroom must have printed picture symbols to go along with any verbal communication that takes place. This is extremely time consuming and not very engaging. An interactive whiteboard would allow for me to reach my students more effectively and help them build very necessary communication skills with engaging lessons. With lack of funding our students go without some of the most basic classroom necessities so receiving an interactive whiteboard is out of the question.
