Our school is working on school wide tools for students to use when they are not quite feeling ready to attend to academic or social tasks. The ability to identify emotions and self-regulate are essential life long skills. We are using the Zone of Regulation school wide and implementing a "tool of the week" that will help our students. We are examining a variety of tools, which including breathing tasks, movement activities, deep pressure, and the use of fidgets.
By teaching students when and how to use strategies and materials to promote independence in self-regulation, we are providing a life-long skill that is essential for all. These materials will allow me to provide each grade level classroom, special education rooms, specialists, and related service providers with box and starting materials to use with their students.
Each kit will include 5-6 sensory fidgets that will become part of the classroom's calming or break area. Some students calm better touching materials, some students prefer to look at visual stimuli to calm down. The items in the box focus on multiple sensory systems. Some students will require a timer in order to monitor the amount of time they use the materials, especially when first introducing the sensory boxes.
