Our school has recently experienced a huge influx of migrant students from the Middle East. Most speak little to no English and several also lack the ability to read and write in their first language. It is hard to imagine the level of trauma these beautiful children have experienced. Several have spent the last few years living in refugee camps, many have seen acts of war, and all have been uprooted from friends and family. Upon arrival to America they are placed in neighborhoods such as ours with high poverty and cheap housing. Now it is a race against time for the parents to find jobs and the children to learn English. That's where I come in. My job is to provide a safe, welcoming environment for them to learn to read, write, speak and learn in English while also learning about American culture, interactions, and traditions. They also need to to learn their grade-level math, social studies, and science.
